Kentucky Equine Research President Presents at Equine Science Society Symposium

Joe D. Pagan, Ph.D., president of Kentucky Equine Research, presented papers on exercise science and nutrition at the 26th Equine Science Society Symposium, held June 3-6 in Asheville, North Carolina.
Pagan presented the findings of several recent studies completed at Kentucky Equine Research. Topics included:
- Measurement of heart rate, speed, and lactate during upper-level eventing competition as indicators of performance;
- Supplementation of Thoroughbred racehorses in early training with a marine-derived mineral complex to increase bone density;
- Nutrient composition of European feeds used during the 2018 World Equestrian Games; and
- Effects of omeprazole on calcium digestibility.
Dr. Pagan was also involved in presentations completed in partnership with Michigan State University on the impact of antioxidant supplementation on glycogen repletion.
