Question
Is there a specific feeding or electrolyte protocol that will keep my Thoroughbred racehorse from developing thumps?
Answer
After consulting with a veterinarian on your question, I have several suggestions for pre- and post-race feeding. He recommended removing excess calcium from the diet three days prior to a race. Reducing the amount of calcium before a race prompts the horse’s body to conserve calcium and stimulate the parathyroid hormone. Although it sounds counterintuitive to remove calcium, it actually stimulates the body’s ability to mobilize calcium in times of need.
While the concentrate feed can remain the same, changes in forages and supplements should be made three days prior to the race. If feeding alfalfa (lucerne)-based hay such as a timothy/alfalfa mix, you should switch from that to straight timothy hay to stimulate calcium mobilization. In addition, remove any supplements that may be adding extra calcium. If feeding stabilized rice bran, discontinue that as well because it can be high in calcium.
For post-race recovery and calcium replenishment, Race Recovery (available in the United States) electrolyte therapy is recommended. Race Recovery consists of two tubes of paste for quick electrolyte recovery after the race and a powder electrolyte for ongoing maintenance. This product is designed specifically for horses given furosemide.
