Question
I am using EquiShure to help my off-the-track Standardbred put on weight, as he is struggling to keep it on at the moment. I have seen weight improvement with EquiShure already in only three days. When would you start introducing prebiotics?
Answer
I am glad to hear you are seeing an improvement with EquiShure. I recommend you wait a little bit before beginning prebiotics to give the hindgut microbial population time to restabilize and balance from the change with EquiShure.
Once the pH is more hospitable in the hindgut, the beneficial bacteria counts should rebound. There will be a healthier environment for them, and they will be able to break down plant fiber more efficiently, which will supply more calories for the horse (allowing weight gain).
You may find that you will not need prebiotics; but if you decide to use them, I would wait two weeks to one month to give EquiShure a chance to work optimally.
