Back-to-Back Four-Star Wins for Liz Halliday-Sharp and Deniro Z

Kentucky Equine Research-sponsored eventer Liz Halliday-Sharp and Deniro Z added a win at the Plantation Field International CCI4*-S to their recent streak of success. The pair took the lead right away and remained penalty-free, galloping over the cross-country finish line at the optimum time to secure the win.

Liz and Deniro began their winning streak this summer at the Fair Hill International Horse Trials, where they led wire-to-wire in the Open Intermediate. Next, a speedy trip around the cross-country course at the Mars Great Meadow International CCI4*-S moved the pair up the leaderboard for the win at that event.

A “get-it-done” mindset at Great Meadow helped the pair earn blue, but this weekend Liz had a different plan for cross-country. “I rode my pants off at Great Meadow, and it was a little sketchy in places, so I just thought, ‘Let’s just tidy this up.’ The horse felt full of running and felt world-class the whole way around,” she told The Chronicle of the Horse.

She continued, “I had a little bit of an exciting moment at the first water where he jumped in so big, and then I got really deep to the skinny and sort of got smacked in the face, and I was seeing double on my way to the coffin, but luckily my vision came back just before we had to jump in! It shows what a great horse he is. A question like that, right before the coffin, and he jumped in and didn’t look at anything. He’s a world-class horse, and I’m just lucky to ride him.”

We couldn’t believe it because he looks wonderful, and he’s a very happy horse. When his performance dwindled at an event, we had him scoped, and we were horrified to see how many ulcers he had,” she said. “Now, we’re really strict with our feeding program. We’ve always supported RE-LEVE Original, but he used to get a little bit more energizing feed. Now, he is purely on RE-LEVE Original, and he’s never been better.”
