Question
I am unable to purchase in my area any of the high-fat, low-starch feeds that would be suitable for my mare diagnosed with polysaccharide storage myopathy (PSSM). I work my mare four or five days a week. Is there something else I can feed her?
Answer
Since you can’t get Re-Leve, the original low-starch feed that has proven effective in so many cases of PSSM, you could try the classic PSSM diet of alfalfa pellets and oil, to which you could add rice bran and a vitamin/mineral supplement like Micro-Max.
This diet has been used effectively in many sport horses. If you would like me to do a complete diet with the appropriate amounts for your horse just enter the information into the form here and submit it.
